With global warming becoming more and more serious, people are more yearning to choose some low-carbon and eco-friendly windows and doors material. These materials release less indoor polluting gases and are more beautiful than traditional materials. How to judge the low-carbon environmental protection materials, and what criteria should be used to choose? There are so many environmentally friendly windows and doors on the market, which brand is good and meet the people’s demand as well?

Through this article, you will learn about the common materials and types of eco-friendly windows and doors on the market currently. We will introduce the types of eco-friendly windows and doors, and how this material protects the environment and plays a role in environmental protection, also how they are energy saving. Finally, we will give a few tips on how to choose sustainable windows and doors.

What is eco-friendly windows and doors?

Generally, eco-friendly windows refer to the full window unit that is eco-friendly. Frame wise this means a frame that is constructed with a lower transfer material such as wood, composite or vinyl, and that is resistant to water or structural damages with thaws or freezing temperatures outside. For the panes themselves, you should be looking for double pane windows.

Double pane windows are constructed to have two single pane glass panes with an air gap. This air gap ensures that hot air does not exist and makes the window resistant to fogging up or frosting. Finally, the finish or glazing of the window also affects the eco-friendly nature of a window. Most eco-friendly windows have what is called a low e glaze which works to limit the impact that UV rays have on the home, and the surrounding furniture.

Types of eco-friendly windows and doors materials

Here are 4 types eco-friendly windows and doors material we used most widely

Vinyl eco friendly windows are one of the most popular windows in that they are extremely durable, highly energy efficient, and cost-effective. One of the cons of vinyl windows is that they are available in fewer styles than their counterparts when it comes to color and texture. However, for those concerned with skyrocketing energy costs, vinyl windows are the most energy efficient option, which can make a huge difference in lowering heating and cooling costs.

The best choice for eco-friendly windows is fiberglass. However, it is the most expensive window material. The fact that these windows will last for a long time and are resistant to damage from denting, rotting, and warping will help deter the cost, as they will not need a great deal of upkeep and repair.

Those who prefer a more traditional looking window for their home usually opt for wooden windows. They cost less than fiberglass windows and are indeed elegant for older homes. However, wood windows are prone to such conditions as warping and rotting, as they are not able to withstand harsh weather conditions as well as other window materials.

Aluminum is the most popular choice for windows, as it can withstand even the harshest weather due to its high durability. Keep in mind that aluminum windows tend to warp as they age; thus, they do not have a longer lifespan as do fiberglass and vinyl windows.

Standards for eco-friendly windows and doors

Standard 1: Thermal insulation

Modern Chinese buildings are used to installing large transparent windows to facilitate indoor lighting. In the case of poor thermal insulation of windows and doors , it has led to increased electricity and coal consumption for heating in winter in the vast northern regions.

According to calculations by relevant departments, the current standard K value for windows and doors  in Europe is 1.3, and the average K value for windows and doors  in my country is about 3.5. The area of existing buildings and housing in cities and towns in China is about 63 billion square meters.

If windows and doors  account for 15% of the construction area, if the windows and doors  used in these buildings are replaced by high-end energy-saving windows and doors , it can save 180 million tons of standard coal every year, which is about the whole year of China. 10% of coal production, the energy saving value is huge.

Standard 2: Thermal insulation

It can be seen from the relevant report that in terms of temperature, the temperature difference between the use of energy-saving and environmental protection windows and doors  and the use of ordinary windows and doors  can be about 4°C.

If calculated according to a family of three living in a 100-square-meter house, keeping the indoor temperature at 20°C to 26°C, only a two-horsepower air conditioner consumes 10 to 12 kWh a day.

If you use energy-saving windows and doors  with thermal insulation , Can save at least 30% of electricity, that is, the air conditioner is turned on for 2 hours, and the indoor temperature can be maintained for 5 to 6 hours at a comfortable temperature. Calculated to save 3 to 4 kWh a day, 3 months in summer can save about 270 kWh, save more than 150 yuan, and save energy by more than 25%.

Standard 3: sound insulation and air tightness

When it comes to environmental pollution, most people think of air pollution such as smog. However, according to relevant reports, in 2016, Chinese authorities received a total of 1.19 million environmental complaints, of which 522,000 were noise complaints, accounting for 43.9% of the total environmental complaints.

Moreover, the larger the city, the worse the noise pollution. Noise pollution is becoming a shortcoming of the urban environment. If you use energy-saving windows and doors , you can effectively reduce air pollution and noise pollution.

According to research, a room facing the street, the noise during the day may reach 70 decibels to 90 decibels, and the use of energy-saving windows and doors  can reduce the noise by at least 35%, allowing We have a quiet place to rest and study.

Standard 4: Utilization

The focus of energy conservation and environmental protection is to solve the problem of resource shortage in China.

China accounts for 9% of the world’s arable land, 6% of water resources, 4% of forests, 1.8% oil, 0.7% natural gas, less than 9% iron ore, less than 5% copper ore, and less than 2% Bauxite mines feed 22% of the world’s population; most mineral resources have less than half the world’s average per capita.

China’s coal, oil, and natural gas per capita resources are only 55%, 11%, and 4%. China’s advantage is its large population, and its disadvantage is its lack of resources. Therefore, to achieve energy-saving environmental protection windows and doors , in the choice of materials, we must choose materials that are easy to recycle and are conducive to environmental protection.

How's the eco-friendly material do help to the environment?

Windows and doors are the weak links in the insulation of building envelopes. From the analysis of building energy consumption, it is found that the energy lost through the external windows of the house is very serious, which is the main reason for affecting the thermal environment of the building and causing excessive energy consumption. .

In traditional buildings, the heat transfer through the window accounts for more than 20% of the total energy consumption of the building; in energy-efficient buildings, when the thermal resistance of the wall using insulation materials increases, the heat loss of the window accounts for a greater proportion of the total energy consumption of the building. The reason for the energy loss of windows and doors  is the heat exchange between the windows and doors  and the surrounding environment. The process includes: the heat of solar radiation entering the building through the glass; the heat transfer loss through the glass; the heat loss through the window pane and the window frame; the window opening heat The heat loss caused by the bridge; the heat loss caused by the cold wind penetration of the gap, etc.

It is understood that there are many factors that affect the heat loss of windows and doors , mainly in the following aspects: the heat transfer coefficient of windows and doors . The heat transfer coefficient of windows and doors  refers to the heat transfer through a unit area in a unit time. The greater the heat transfer coefficient, the greater the heat loss through the windows and doors  in winter. Therefore, by selecting materials for windows and doors , the indoor energy is effectively maintained to save energy.

How to choose for your home decoration

 1. Use eco-friendly materials

Due to the development of new materials, the technology of the main materials (frame materials, glass, seals, hardware accessories and shading facilities, etc.) that make up windows is progressing rapidly, and the use of energy-saving materials is an effective way to save energy for windows and doors

Frame material: The window profile accounts for about 15% to 30% of the opening area of the outer window, which is another weak link of energy loss in the outer window of the building. Therefore, the selection of the window profile is also crucial. At present, there are many types of energy-saving windows, such as heat-insulated aluminum, heat-insulated steel, plastic profiles, glass steel and composite materials (aluminum-plastic, aluminum-wood, etc.).

Among them, the energy-saving effect of the broken bridge aluminum material is better, and it is widely used. It not only retains the advantages of aluminum profiles, but also greatly reduces the heat transfer coefficient of aluminum profiles. Broken bridge aluminum material is to use hot bridge (cold bridge) technology in the aluminum alloy profile section to make the profile divided into inner and outer parts.

 2.  The type of glass

In windows, the glass area accounts for 65% to 75% of the window area. The thermal resistance of ordinary glass is very small, and it almost absorbs far-infrared heat radiation. Single-layer ordinary glass cannot achieve the effect of heat preservation and energy saving. There are many types of door and window glass. Different types of glass have very different light transmittance, shading coefficient and heat transfer coefficient. Thermal conductivity and shading are dual. For winter, we hope that the solar radiation gets heat and makes the indoor temperature rise. But in summer, I hope to reduce solar radiation and avoid entering the room.

Therefore, for different regions, the glass with corresponding heat transfer coefficient and shading coefficient should be selected. In order to reduce thermal conductivity and improve shading, at present, commonly used processing methods for door and window glass are:

Insulating glass

Insulating glass is two or more pieces of glass, with spacers to control the spacing between the inner and outer pieces of insulating glass. The periphery of the double glass is sealed with a sealant to make dry gas between the glass layers, which has the functions of sound insulation, heat insulation, anti-condensation and reducing energy consumption.

Glass coating

The physical or chemical coating process is used to change the heat reflection characteristics of the glass surface and directly reflect the solar radiation back, thereby improving the shading and heat insulation performance of the glass. Coated glass is divided into heat reflective glass (also known as sunlight control glass) and low-e glass (also known as Low-E glass).

The heat reflective glass can change the shading performance in a large range by configuring the structure and thickness of the film layer. Due to the coating of highly reflective and non-heat-absorbing infrared materials, Low-E glass can reflect the heat radiation of the solar band, thereby effectively controlling the sunshade performance of the glass, and also significantly reducing the heat transfer coefficient of the glass.

Glass staining

Adding colorants in the manufacturing process, the shading and thermal insulation properties of colored glass are better than transparent glass. By absorbing part of the direct transmission of sunlight, the solar radiation heat is reduced into the room; however, due to the absorption of heat, the temperature of the self is increased, the temperature difference heat transfer is increased, and the insulation effect is reduced.

3.Ensure the airtightness of windows and doors

The airtightness of doors and windows refers to the ability to prevent air penetration when the doors and windows are closed. The level of air tightness of doors and windows has a great impact on heat loss. Outdoor wind changes will adversely affect room temperature. The higher the air tightness level, the less heat loss and the smaller the impact on room temperature.

The quality of the opening sealing material not only affects the insulation and energy saving effect of the house, but also relates to the waterproof performance of the wall, and the opening sealing material should be selected correctly.

At present, the gap between the four sides of the steel-plastic door and window frame and the wall is usually filled with polyurethane foam. Such materials not only have a filling effect, but also have good sealing and thermal insulation properties. In addition, the more widely used sealing materials include silicone rubber and EPDM rubber strips.

Sealing strips for other parts are divided into wool strips and rubber strips. Sealing strips are used for sealing between glass and fans and frames, and play an important role in watertightness, airtightness and energy saving in plastic steel doors and windows. The sealing strip must have sufficient tensile strength, good elasticity, good temperature resistance and aging resistance, and the cross-sectional structure size should match the plastic steel door and window profiles.

Bad quality rubber strips have poor aging resistance. After prolonged exposure to the sun, the rubber strips will harden after aging, lose their elasticity, and easily fall off. Not only will the seals be poor, but they will also cause safety hazards due to loose glass.

With the development of the environment, more and more people are pursuing a green and environmentally friendly lifestyle. Eco-friendly materials for windows and doors are also one of people’s first choices. As Eco-friendly windows and doors, energy saving and noise prevention must be achieved. Before you buying, you should also choose eco-friendly profiles as well.
